MJ Tours

East meets West tours of Hong Kong told through the eyes of an Ex-British Soldier who arrived in the '80s and never left. Your private tour with a genuine Hong Kong-er starts here! Hong Kong: from British Colony to Asia's World City.

I have seen Hong Kong as a soldier, businessman, father, and sportsman; witnessed the1997 Handover of Sovereignty and two financial crises; and arranged and lead bespoke day and night tours around the dynamic metropolis centred on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, as well as tours of Lantau Island and Macau.  I do not require a deposit and can take bookings at short notice and a "real" guide book or bus tour is no substitute for a knowledgeable and good-humoured Englishman who has spent all of his adult life in Hong Kong.

We'll cover history from before the opium wars to present day and everything in between,: colonial rule, WWII, housing, economy, raising a family in HK, running a business, tax, "politics", sport, horse racing, religion, HKID card system/immigration, education, private clubs (a current hot topic), the role of the British Army and much, much more.  We'll use public transport as we take in the sights, which can include the Peak Tram, Star Ferry, Ding Ding Tram, MTR, Bus, and Taxi. For food, we can have dim sum, noodles, roasted meats, seafood, have milk tea and French toast at a cha chaan teng, eat from Dai Pai Dongs and even try snake soup. I can cook Cantonese (and many other styles) food in my home, take guests for lunch or dinner overlooking the pitch at Kowloon Cricket Club and go for a curry in Chung King Mansions. Some guests yearn for a ham and cheese sandwich and a coffee, whatever your tastes we'll fit them in nicely. I'll take photos as we tour and send together with a pdf highlighting where we've been.

Packages can include tours and accommodation and tours can be lengthened/shortened/varied depending on preference and energy levels. Offering award-winning accommodation at Lantau Lodge, situated on the 2nd Floor of the family home (we live on 1st Floor) we are your home away from home in Hong Kong. We have easy access to beaches for swimming, another beach for kiteboarding (Shui Hau Bay is Hong Kong's centre for kiteboarding from September through to April) hiking (we are on the Lantau Trail in the middle of sections 9 and 10) and just 10 minutes from Tian Tan Buddha, Po Lin Monastery and cable car, 15 minutes from Tai O fishing village and 35 minutes to Disneyland Hong Kong.

As a former UK soldier who chose to remain and live in Hong Kong, Michael brought both a local and historic perspective to the adventure. Anyone looking for an amazing overview of Hong Kong should contact Michael, who will customize a day or more around his guests wishes.

Thank you Michael! Anyone who books with you is sure to have an amazing time!

On my one day in Hong Kong, Michael gave me a wonderful tour. He filled my eyes and ears with the sights and sounds of the city, all of them fascinating and enjoyable. I experienced so much more than I could have seen without him.

Michael knows Hong Kong like the back of his hand and made our day the highlight of our holiday. He was humorous, full of energy and extremely generous with his time.
